Kano Hisbah bans sports betting in renewed crackdown on immorality
The Kano State religious police force, Hisbah, has placed a ban on all forms of sports betting in a renewed effort to crack down on immorality in the North-West State.
Briefing journalists on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah Board, Dr Mujaheed Aminuddeen, enumerated the board’s new strategy to enforce moral values.
He said the board has relaunched ‘operation flush out immorality’ and its operatives would soon commence implementation to ensure individuals and groups bent on violating social order in the state are brought to book.
He said to restore sanity and discipline, the Hisbah would arrest any landlord who rented apartments to persons without verified identifications to cut down the increasing cases of residential buildings being used as lodges and motels in the ancient city.
Hisbah rolls out new regulations
The Hisbah Deputy Commander disclosed that the board had further issued new rules regarding courtship, which specify that prospective couples would no longer be allowed to sit in tinted vehicles during courtship, particularly at night.
Aminudeen stressed that while street begging is prohibited by law, female beggars who stayed outdoors late into the night risk being arrested.
He expressed the board’s concern about the increasing rate of prostitution among young girls and therefore warned that any woman seen in a tricycle after 10 pm would also be apprehended.
He warned the public against violating the rules, adding that anyone caught would face a stiff penalty.
The Hisbah boss urged parents and guardians to keep close eyes on their children and wards, especially females and prevent them from engaging in acts capable of contravening any of the rules stipulated across the state.
