Herdsman arrested with AK-47 rifle, live ammunition in Enugu

A herdsman, identified as Ibrahim Adamumale, has been arrested with an AK-47 assault rifle and 24 rounds of live ammunition in Enugu.

The arrest was announced on Tuesday 30th August by the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu.

The 20 year old Adamumale, from Nasarawa State used to live at Hausa Quarters in the 9th Mile Area of Enugu and reared cattle in communities within the Udi Local Government Area and environs before his arrest.

The Police spokesman explained that the herdsman was in possession of the “sophisticated” weapon and ammunition when he was apprehended by policemen and some members of the community in a bush in Affa community, in the Udi Area on Monday, August 29.

Amaraizu further said Adamumale had fired several shots into the air in an attempt to avoid arrest; he was however later arrested and taken into custody.

The police spokesman stated that while the suspect is being interrogated, investigations are also going on to find out how the herdsman got the weapon.

This development follows the recent herdsmen’s attack on Attakwu, a community in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, which left a Catholic seminarian, Lazarus Nwafor, killed. Four others sustained severe injuries in the incident.
