43 prisoners pardoned in Ondo ahead of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s inauguration

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has granted clemency to 43 prisoners, signalling his commitment to reformative justice and humane governance.

The decision, made ahead of his swearing-in ceremony today, follows the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olukayode Ajulo, SAN.

A statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, described the act as a reflection of Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to justice, fairness, and rehabilitation.

“As part of this initiative, the Governor has ordered the outright release of eight individuals who were previously incarcerated,” the statement read. “Additionally, 15 condemned inmates who had been sentenced to death by hanging have had their sentences commuted to various prison terms. Furthermore, 20 others serving life sentences have had their punishments reduced to more lenient terms.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision underscores his belief in second chances and the possibility of rehabilitation. “It is His Excellency’s responsibility to ensure that our justice system reflects mercy and humanity,” the statement added.

The governor’s move aligns with his broader vision of addressing issues within the penal system and promoting the reintegration of former inmates as productive members of society. His administration is expected to continue pushing for reforms that balance justice with compassion.
