Governor Fubara Vows to Enforce Supreme Court Ruling on Rivers State Political Crisis

Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has pledged to fully implement the recent Supreme Court judgment addressing the state’s prolonged political turmoil.

The ruling, delivered on February 28, upheld a federal high court’s decision barring the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation from disbursing statutory monthly allocations to the state. Additionally, the court ordered the Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers House of Assembly to resume legislative duties and nullified the controversial local government elections held on October 5, 2024.

Speaking at the inauguration of new judges’ quarters in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the ruling, emphasizing that his administration’s priority remains the well-being of Rivers residents.

“The Supreme Court has spoken, and my administration will implement the judgment in full. This is not about me—it is about the good of our state,” Fubara declared.

The governor also lamented the waste of resources that the prolonged political feud has caused, highlighting the financial drain on both factions.

“You can imagine the kind of waste that has occurred on both sides. These are funds that could have been used to develop our state and improve lives,” he said.

Fubara, who has been locked in a tense power struggle with Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stressed the need for peace and stability in Rivers.

“I have always maintained that nothing is too big to sacrifice for peace. At the end of the day, it is about the people, not me. It has been a tough 16 months, but what matters is that the interests of our state must come first.”

Rivers State has been a battleground of political tensions since the fallout between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, who was instrumental in Fubara’s rise to power. Their worsening rift has fueled instability, prompting court interventions and heightening tensions within the state’s political landscape.
