GHANA: Grandma dips child’s hand into hot charcoal for stealing meat

Aisha Tetteh, a high-handed grandma from Amasaman in the Greater Accra region of Ghana has been arrested for burning the hand of her 13-year-old granddaughter who was accused of stealing meat from the soup pot.

The 62-year-old woman was apprehended with one Godson Ablor who was an accomplice in what was regarded as a punishment by the duo.

Addressing the incident, the spokesperson of the Accra Regional Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mrs Effia Tenge, disclosed that Aisha and Godson accused the girl of stealing meat from two separate pots belonging to Aisha and Godson’s wife.

“Ablor’s wife, Regina Ayi complained that pieces of meat was missing meat from her pot of soup, after which Aisha also claimed meat from her soup had gone missing,” Mrs Tenge said.

When all the four children in the house were interrogated to find the perpetrator, they all denied being responsible, and the victim was unequivocally accused of being culpable.

As a deterrent to the young adolescent girl, they both carved her left finger with razor blade before shoving her hand into the burning charcoal.

The girl was eventually left untreated until a municipal member took her to the hospital and reported her assailants to the police. The duo have been charged to court for abuse.

There’s been rising calls to make child punishment illegal as many parents and guardians continue to abuse children under the guise of punishment.
