Ganduje Resigns Amid Tinubu’s Outreach to Kwankwaso

Abdullahi Ganduje has resigned as national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move widely linked to President Bola Tinubu’s reported efforts to bring his long-time political rival, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, into the ruling party.

Ganduje, who governed Kano state between 2015 and 2023, announced his resignation with immediate effect on Friday. His exit follows mounting internal tensions and a renewed political realignment strategy by the presidency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Multiple party sources told TheCable that the resignation was real. “Between me and you, it is true, but I can’t confirm officially — and please don’t quote me,” a senior official at the APC national secretariat said.

Another party insider revealed that one of the APC’s national vice chairmen would assume leadership in an acting capacity pending the party’s convention scheduled for December.

Ganduje’s departure comes despite a string of recent public engagements that seemingly contradicted earlier claims about his health. Earlier on Friday, he led a delegation of the APC national working committee (NWC) to visit Niger state governor Umaru Bago over the recent Mokwa flood tragedy. On Thursday, he was also present at INEC’s second quarterly consultative meeting with political party leaders in Abuja.

Appointed in August 2023, Ganduje’s tenure as chairman was marked by internal legal disputes, especially within the Kano APC chapter, and growing resistance from party stakeholders.

His resignation sets the stage for what could be a major political twist: the defection of Kwankwaso — a former Kano governor and NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate — to the APC.
