Neusroom is leading fundraising drive for Abosede Adeola, wife of murdered Sasa Cobbler. Here’s why it matters

Abosede Adeola Sasa market

The bloody fracas at Sasa market in Akinyele local government area of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, on February 12, 2021, may have lasted for only 24 hours, but it may take years to recover from the devastating effect it left on the community, traders and parties involved.

While those who know say the total loss at the Sasa market is worth over N200 million, the hardest hit by the crisis appears to be the family of Adeola Sakirudeen, the cobbler whose death led to the bloody riot on Friday, February 12, 2021.

Adeola’s death did not only threaten the nation’s peace, but it also left his family in misery.

Neusroom reported how we found Adeola’s family after a long search, and visited their home around Onikainkain, at Moniya, Ibadan on Sunday, February 28, 2021.

During the visit, the Neusroom team met the family – wife and four kids ages 15, 11, 8, and 4, in misery where they live in an uncompleted one-room apartment.

His wife, Abosede Adeola, told Neusroom that since the death of her husband, “we’ve been coping but it can never be as it used to be.”

“Getting support for my children is the most important thigh I need,” she said.

Abosede works as a shop attendant and earns N15,000 monthly. But there is little her monthly income can do to raise the family and things are bound to go worse for the family with Adeola’s death.

Since the report was published, the Neusroom team has received feedback from several well-meaning Nigerians looking to support the family.

Neusroom has since commenced a fundraising drive. It is hoped that funds from the donations will help turn around the fortune of the family.

ID Africa which owns Neusroom and other members of the team have made donations and are now inviting everyone who can, to come to this family’s aid.

Why it matters:

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, after assessing the level of destruction at the market, on Sunday, February 14, 2021, had promised that the government would compensate those who suffered losses in the fracas, but government aid is still out of sight, about two months after.

While government support may take a long time, and may never come, supporting the family will meet their urgent needs as the wife is still facing a waiting period called ‘Iddah’ as required by Islamic doctrine.

An Islamic cleric told Neusroom that the ‘iddah’,  as stated in the Quran, is a waiting period of four months and 10 days that a Muslim woman observes after the death of her husband or after a divorce.

Abosede told Neusroom she is expected to confine herself indoors for four months which she started after her husband’s death in February.

How is a widow expected to survive this waiting period without an income?
