Full Profile: Meet the 2023 MTN MIP Fellows

The second edition of the MTN Media Innovation Programme (MIP) has kicked off with the commencement of training for 20 media practitioners selected across Nigeria’s print, electronic, and online platforms.

Launched in 2022, MIP is a professional media training offered by the School of Media and Communication at Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, to empower media practitioners and enhance their capacities both professionally and in business.

Since the first season in 2022, the programme, fully sponsored by Nigeria’s leading telco – MTN, received an overwhelming response, with over 2000 applications received in 2023. The participants are looking forward to gaining valuable insights from real-life case studies, which will equip them to excel in their media careers.

Here are the profiles of 20 fellows who will be undergoing MIP intensive six-month training.

Abbas Jimoh, Media Trust Group
Abbas Olasunkanmi Jimoh is a graduate of Mass Communication from The Polytechnic Ibadan, Oyo State, and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Kaduna State. He has been a journalist for over twenty years, having worked in the defunct Sketch Press Limited, publishers of the Daily and Weekend Sketch titles.

Abbas currently works in the Media Trust Group, publishers of Daily Trust, Aminiya, Teen Trust, Tambari, and Kilimanjaro titles, where he has the honour of covering business, foreign, and sports events within and outside Nigeria. A highlight of his career in the Media Trust Group is coordinating the coverage of politics during the 2023 General Elections.

Abbas Jimoh is a strategic thinker and also has a selfless and jovial personality. As someone who always wants the best in his endeavours, he makes good developments to be better to achieve the best and passionately gets tasks done successfully, on time, and with minimal or no supervision.

Abdulrasheed Hussain, Premier Radio
Abdulrasheed Hussain is a passionate media professional, who hails from Kano State, Nigeria. With a B.Sc. in Mass Communication from Bayero University, Kano, and a diploma in Mass Communication from Kano State Polytechnic, he has been able to lay a strong educational foundation for a career in impactful journalism, embodied by skills in media production and reporting.

With years of experience in news production and presentation behind him, Mr. Hussain currently serves as the Senior News Editor and New Media Content Creator at Premier Radio, Kano.

Prior to his engagement with Premier Radio, he had productive stints at Nasara Radio and Aminci Radio, where he acquired valuable experience in news production, research and on-air presentation. Mr. Hussain is known for his dedication to delivering accurate and engaging news content.

His well-established commitment to journalistic integrity and continuous pursuit of knowledge makes him a valued contributor to the media landscape in Kano.

Ezinne Glory Alozie, Darling 107.3 FM
Ezinne Glory Alozie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science, from Abia State University, Uturu. She has six years of experience as a News Producer, Caster, and Reporter at Darling 107.3 FM, Owerri, Imo State.

As a reporter, Ezinne has beats she covers which include; Ministry of Women Affairs, Imo State; Ministry of Health, Imo State; Imo State Police Command and NURTW Imo Chapter. She has also done exciting stories both on human angle and Social Justice, among others. In 2021, she attended a series of training with BBC Media Action. She also did fact-checking and detecting misinformation (WABMA) in 2022. In 2023, she participated in the EU-SDGN project II/IMS-led Capacity Building on Digital/Multimedia Storytelling for Women Journalists with Institute for Media and Society (IMS) and a virtual training on holistic security for Nigerian Journalists with Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID).

Ezinne is a team player, open and willing to learn at every given time. She uses her spare time to watch movies, cook and listen to good music.

Amaka Okoye, Deutsche Welle
Amaka Okoye is a seasoned and very determined journalist who has practiced in and outside of Nigeria. She has degrees in both Journalism and Maritime Administration and Management. She is currently a West Africa Correspondent for German Broadcaster, Deutsche Welle (DW). She has covered various beats on women and children, women’s rights and justice, illegal migration, sex trafficking, human angle reports, criminal justice, and documentaries on prisoners in Nigeria’s biggest prisons- Kirirkiri maximum and medium correctional centers.

Recently, she covered Conflict and Crisis extensively becoming one of the very few female journalists in Nigeria to have covered conflicts from the front lines and travelled through Nigeria’s hostile regions. She has covered most of the mass abductions by bandits up North, and being on ground in all of each coverage. She has traveled to the most volatile regions of the crisis regions; including returning to Chibok and Ngarranam recently to document first-hand experiences of the returned Chibok Girls, as well as parents still waiting for the return of their daughters. She also looked into the resettling of over 500 people displaced by the violent extremism and activities of the Boko Haram terrorists.

Amaka has covered humanitarian crises including the reality of internally displaced persons as a result of Boko Haram insurgency now scattered in several camps and has travelled to 29 states out of the 36 states in the country with the hope of traveling to all the states pursuing the most uncommon and untold stories. Amaka is a Fellow of the Prestigious Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism and a Fellow at the Young Africa Media Fellowship. She is also an Alumnus of Thomson Reuters Foundation, and was recently named among the Most Powerful Women In Journalism in Nigeria.

Anuoluwapo Odubanjo, FabWoman
Anuoluwapo Odubanjo is a writer, content strategist, and digital media professional. She started her career at Iconway Media in 2013 as a content writer, where she grew to become the managing editor in charge of three online platforms across the news, entertainment, and pop culture verticals.

She is currently building FabWoman, a digital media lifestyle website that leverages technology to educate, inform, and tell the stories of women. In her capacity as founder and lead strategist, she supports the growth of the platform as a leading destination for female-centric content, not just in Nigeria but across the world. She has also worked with brands and agencies across the FMCG, Finance, Media, Tech, and Non-profit industries to help them reach their campaign objectives and bring their branded content to life.

In 2019, she was headhunted by Opera News as a Content Specialist for their lifestyle category when they officially launched operations in Nigeria. She also worked briefly at Pulse Nigeria and at United People Global, a Switzerland-based non-profit organization, between 2021 and 2022. She was listed as one of the ‘Nine Top Women of Impact’ by Tawer Africa, commemorating International Women’s Day in March 2023.

Anuoluwapo is a graduate of International Relations from Obafemi Awolowo University, and holds a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Lagos. With a knack for personal development, she has taken several certifications and has attended various workshops hosted by Google, British Council, Access Bank, Africa Check, and Ripples Nigeria.

Ayomide Oguntimehin, Soccernet

Ayomide Oguntimehin is a CAF-accredited sports journalist and Chief Editor at Soccernet.ng, with a proven track record in conducting interviews with Super Eagles stars such as William Troost-Ekong, Taiwo Awoniyi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Ademola Lookman, and many others. He has also made a significant impact in breaking transfer news stories.

Grounded in video editing, video journalism, social media management, and content strategy, Ayomide brings a wealth of expertise to his work.

With a Bachelor’s degree in English Language from Adeyemi College of Education and a Master’s Degree in School Library and Media Technology from the University of Ibadan, Ayomide is well-prepared to excel in the field.

Throughout his career, Ayomide has demonstrated his skill in creating compelling and engaging content, particularly through his expertise in video editing. His dedication to his craft has earned him numerous award nominations, a testament to his commitment to excellence and the impact of his work.

Babajide Awoyinfa is a skilled and seasoned journalist with over eight years of experience. He is an enthusiastic and dynamic individual that thrives in challenging and demanding environments. Chinenye Anuforo, The Sun Publishing Limited
Chinenye Anuforo is a journalist with over 10 years experience and is well versed in business reporting and economy, technology, gadgets reviews, telecoms as well as business policy reviews, among others. She is currently the ICT Editor, The Sun Publishing Limited-publishers of Daily Sun, Saturday Sun, Sunday Sun, and Sporting Sun. Her passion for technology has led to various publications on emerging technologies, telecoms, and other ICT-related issues which were published on print and the website of her organisation.

Prior to that, Chinenye was the Capital Market Correspondent of the same Newspaper for more than five years. She was also a contributor to The Economy Magazine, Nigeria’s most influential and respected monthly magazine, published by Economic Publications Limited a subsidiary of D.E.R Limited publisher of The African Economy, Banking & Finance magazines, and Annual Meetings Daily.

She obtained HND (Mass Communication) from the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State in 2008, and was trained in Capital Market reporting by the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) Academy, Nigeria. Elizabeth Musa, News Central Television
Elizabeth Musa is a broadcast journalist with extensive experience managing radio and television projects. She has masterfully served as a television producer and presenter for over five years, producing “Breakfast Central,” the first pan-African variety morning show that focuses on topical issues from across the continent. Apart from her impressive work producing on News Central Television’s prime-time show, Elizabeth hosts live events and television shows showcasing Africa’s highlights, lifestyle, and finance. Her goal is to always exert a far-reaching effect in shaping culture.

She has a background in insurance, having worked for years as a Direct Sales Manager in one of the world’s leading insurance companies where she carted away recognition for being a diamond performer. In that world, Elizabeth is known for her dedication and proven results. She has a track record of working on high-impact projects with a focus on pushing the African narrative and influencing culture.

Over the years Elizabeth has cultivated a broad range of competencies that can seamlessly merge into other industries.

Frank Eleanya, Business Day Media Limited
Frank Eleanya is a technology and innovation journalist covering the entire ecosystem in Nigeria and West Africa. He is the Technology and Entertainment News Desk Editor of BusinessDay Media Limited.

As an active enthusiast and expert in new technologies, Frank uses his platform to provide information and intelligence to the public in areas such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, fintech, and startup funding. He has also done several deep-dive articles on Afrobeats and Nollywood which seek to shed light on the intricacies of the industry and highlight the best and the challenges.

His contributions in highlighting innovations in payment services like cryptocurrencies and mobile money have seen traditional media platforms like BusinessDay embrace technology education as a critical aspect of their reporting.

Okonji Emmanuel, THISDAY Newspapers
Okonji Emmanuel is a journalist from Nigeria, with over 20 years of experience in ICT reporting. He worked in a private school as a teacher before picking up media appointments with Daily Independent Newspapers as a Reporter in 2001 and rose to the rank of Correspondent and Head of ICT Desk. He later joined THISDAY Newspapers in 2011, where he currently works as the ICT Editor.

He breaks technology news and gets comments from readers who find value in his technology stories. He analyzes issues in the technology and telecoms space and has interviewed CEOs and MDs within and outside Nigeria.

He has interviewed Global CEOs like Microsoft CEO, Mr. Satya Nadella, including Executive Vice Chairman (EVCs) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), such as late Dr. Eugene Juwa, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe and Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta. NCC is Nigeria’s Telecoms industry regulator.

Adediran Adeleke Olufemi, Daily Telegraph Publishing Company
Adediran Adeleke Olufemi is a passionate journalist, author, and content creator who currently works as a Correspondent at the Daily Telegraph Publishing Company.

Adediran is also an European Union (EU) trained Climate Change journalist, reporting environmental issues and creating awareness on the impact of climate change on society.

With over 10 years of experience in journalism, Adediran’s career kick-started as a graduate intern reporter at The Guardian newspaper where he learned the ropes of the profession. He later became the Online Editor of Uhuru Times newspaper. Adediran was a 2021 winner of the Free To Share Project grant of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) and his journey in journalism took him to Blueprint newspaper and served as the Ogun State Correspondent, reporting wide range of social issues, such as politics, economy, education, sports, among others.

Adediran holds a HND and a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) and Crescent University respectively. He has numerous articles and features to his credit and has been nominated for several awards, including the Nigeria Media Merit Awards (NMMA). Adediran teaches and mentors young and aspiring journalists with a commitment to contributing to their success in life.

Oluwaseun Efunnuga, Pulse Nigeria
Oluwaseun Efunnuga is a digital communication and marketing professional with a background in journalism and Mass Communication qualifications from the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

Her passion for communications can be traced to her days as a student when she picked interest in news writing and later became one of the best student News Writer and Editor for the departmental newspaper and magazine. She has been on the media and communications path since 2015 when she interned at the Nigerian Television Authority, Lagos before working as a Digital Content Writer at a digital agency.

Later on, she worked as a Public Relations Executive where she managed film and music brands handling their PR strategy, publicity, social media management and media relations.

Driven by her desire for growth and globally relevant skills, Oluwaseun participated in the Digital Marketing Bootcamp by Digify Africa and leveraged her experience in content writing to become a Digital Marketing Specialist with interest in strategy, content marketing, and marketing analytics.

She currently works with a media company, Pulse Nigeria, as a Marketing and Content Associate where she supports the growth of the various media channels.

When Oluwaseun is not working, she helps professionals to achieve their career goals through CV writing, LinkedIn profile optimization, and career support services. David Michael Oputah, BizWatch
David Michael Oputah is a respected Nigerian business journalist, analyst, and consultant with a knack for simplifying and telling hard business stories with a human-interest angle. He has a first degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos and went on to expand his knowledge in business/human resource management by obtaining a Masters’ degree in Organisational Behaviour (Business Administration).

In a desire to enrich his knowledge in media and communications, he earned a Masters’ degree in Mass Communication, where he learnt invaluable insights and became better suited for his journalism career. He has also attended several media training, symposiums, and workshops both locally and internationally, including those organised by the British Council, Bloomberg.

He is at the moment, the Managing Editor at Nigeria’s foremost business news site, BizWatchNigeria, and he is tasked with the growth and advancement of the medium as he also manages the workforce and makes business decisions for the firm. Prior to that, he worked with a US-based online news site, TheWill Nigeria, where he revamped the reporting style and rose rapidly to become the Nigerian editor.

This Bloomberg-trained financial journalist (BMIA) was a founding staff on the Business desk at TheCable Nigeria and was among the select few who laid the foundations for the now revered online platform.

As a respected business analyst/consultant, he has four times worked with Accenture on the Tony Elumelu Foundation Empowerment Program (TEFEP) as a business analyst, helping to select 1,000 African applicants who would receive the TEF Grant. He was also the lead consultant for the birthing of AllNews.ng, another online news site in Nigeria, as he handled the recruitment, standard operating procedure and designed the workflow for the firm.

Chinedu Chidi, Ripples Nigeria
Chinedu Chidi is a first-class degree graduate of English Language, and has, over the years, expanded his knowledge base to include law, finance and media, creating a broad-based multidisciplinary foundation for his career in media. Having actively participated in different media forms within the media ecosystem, he has steadily settled for a career in digital media, with a special focus on ‘disruption for impact’— a philosophical lynchpin embodying sustainable technology and innovation-driven solutions.

He is a firm believer in the media’s capacity to directly drive change and advocates for the media to pursue endeavours with real impact in society. It is his conviction that the media has the power to deploy meaningful solutions to some of the biggest challenges of our time, from climate change to socio-economic inequities.

As Special Projects Editor of Ripples Nigeria, Chinedu has played an active role in huge projects in data and investigative journalism, geo-journalism and solutions journalism, spanning critical areas such as development, climate change, corruption and transparency, democracy, conflict, social exclusion, and the digital divide.

Within the diverse structure of Ripples Nigeria, he has been afforded further opportunities to advance the cause of the media with vital roles within its sister platforms— as Programme Director of the Ripples Centre for Data and Investigative Journalism (RCDIJ), and Programme Coordinator of Eco-Nai+, Nigeria’s first dedicated digital geo-journalism platform.

Emmanuel Paul, Techpoint Africa
Emmanuel Paul is a seasoned journalist and Managing Editor at Techpoint Africa. He is focused on building products for the growth and sustainability of African media firms. He started his professional career as a teacher; his drive for technology-enabled learning led him to rejuvenate an obsolete computer lab for hands-on ICT lessons.

Starting as an intern covering startups, corporates, and policies at Techpoint Africa in 2019, Emmanuel moved up the ranks, becoming a junior reporter by 2020. After co-hosting the Techpoint Africa Podcast, an insightful news podcast, he co-created “Built in Africa,” a narrative podcast spotlighting African startups and innovators’ journeys. Three of the episodes he scripted and voiced have amassed over half a million listeners.

As a Senior Reporter in 2021, Emmanuel co-launched Techpoint Digest, the firm’s flagship newsletter, diversifying the firm’s content channels and contributing 11% to annual revenue. He’s mentored interns who have become decent journalists and producers. He also managed the Digital Currency Summit, bolstering Techpoint’s reputation and authority in Africa’s blockchain circles.

Since 2022, as Managing Editor, Emmanuel oversees the newsroom, directing story choice, sourcing, and content quality. He created systems to enhance reporter output across different platforms. His reporting centers on telecoms, infrastructure, and startup investments.

Emmanuel has landed exclusive interviews with key figures like Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, and Funke Opeke, MainOne’s CEO. He developed two industry newsletters, Fintech Today and The Workaholic, broadening Techpoint’s audience and revenue. He helped develop the Fintech Summit and Lagos Startup Expo, promoting fintech innovation and startup engagement.

Beyond guiding budding journalists at Techpoint and beyond, he counsels a Christian teenage group in Nigeria on values and career development.

Emmanuel earned a BA in Philosophy and Religions from the University of Benin, specialising in religion’s societal and economic impact. He’s praised for his analytical, collaborative, and innovative mindset. Voted 2022’s Team Player of the Year by colleagues, he embodies dedication, diligence, and cooperative leadership.

Basit Jamiu, Legit Nigeria
Basit Jamiu is a Human Interest Senior Editor at Legit Nigeria. He was a digital columnist for Daily Trust and has been commissioned twice by Humangle Media on special projects.

In 2018, Basit was a recipient of YNaija’s New Establishment List, and in 2019, in recognition of his work as Project Director of AfroAnthology Series, a creative nonfiction initiative; he was listed among the top editors and curators from Africa by the Witsprouts.

He is also an Open Contract Reporting Fellow at ICIR and 2022 Accountability Grantee at Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID).

Todah Opeyemi is the Senior Editor at Zikoko Citizen, a publication under Big Cabal Media, where he leads editorial and multimedia newsroom projects on politics, policy, and governance—to help and educate young Nigerians on how to take action.

Todah is also the creator and host of The Outsiders, a narrative audio project by The Outsiders Stories. Through multimedia formats, he strives to tell and spotlight minority stories in a distinct and dignified style.

With experience across various media platforms, including television, radio, podcasts, digital, and print, Todah has carved a unique niche for himself in the world of journalism.

His expertise spans a wide range of subjects in politics, science, health, and development, with a particular focus on Nigerian and African stories. Todah is a Chemistry graduate whose passion for media and journalism led him to embark on his career as a production assistant and on-air personality (OAP). His science background is evident in the stories he tells, showcasing his unique perspective and knowledge.

Todah’s unique storytelling approach provokes thoughtful discussions and captivates audiences, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of the issues he covers in his roles as a reporter, producer, or editor.

Victor Ogunyinka, Nigerian Tribune
Victor Ogunyinka is the Managing Editor, Online at the Nigerian Tribune, where he oversees the administrative and editorial operations of the online department. He began his journalistic journey in 2014, when he started a job at the Africa Newspapers of Nigeria after concluding an undergraduate degree in microbiology at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo.
Victor’s journalism career started in April 2014 as Senior Health Reporter at the Nigerian Tribune before moving to the online department as Online News Editor and Social Media Manager in the same organisation. Before his appointment as Managing Editor in December 2022, he was the pioneer Senior Managing Editor at The Quest Times, though he resigned in November 2022. Before Quest Times, he was the Online Editor of Vanguard newspapers, one of the leading online media in Nigeria from January 2019 to January 2022.

At Vanguard, he was the pioneer Anchor of the organisation’s online television, popularly known as VanguardLive, which launched on February 14, 2019, with the live coverage of the overnight announcement of the presidential election postponement. It gathered about a million views on Facebook alone in 48 hours.
Victor has attended quite a number of courses and training in digital media and has continued to grow in ensuring that journalism as a tool of redemption is handy in the crusade to have a better society.

Victory Wilson is a multi-award winning TV/Radio Host, Professional Voice Over Artist, Event Compere, Red Carpet Host and Brand Influencer. She is a first class graduate of Psychology, Masters degree holder in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management with a honed passion for media through training and various experiences from over 10,000 hours on live television/radio and Event Compere for High Profile events in Nigeria.

She is a certified media personality of Pan Atlantic University School of Media and Communications and the Pro Emcees Academy, and her experience from years of hosting allows her to blend beautifully with kids and adults alike and produce quality shows.

Currently a Newscaster, Producer and Tv Host with Silverbird Television, the Broadcast Journalist uses media to inform, educate and entertain her viewers and listeners in a unique way that keeps them glued.

Her Tv/Radio shows and works in the media have won her six awards and numerous notable recognitions including, the 2023 Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) TV Presenter of the year award, 2021 Scream Women Awards TV Presenter of the Year, 2022 & 2019 SON Media Personality of the Year, the Intellect Awards Presenter of the Year.

Her Kids show, The Amazing Kids Show has won the 2021 Best Nigerian Kids Show. She is also listed as the Scream Awards 2023 Top 50 Young Persons in Madia, Nigeria’s top 20 OAP’s by Radio Media Nigeria and featured on Tush Magazine in 2022 as a Top Micro-Influencer.
