Five-year-old girl burned to death in arson attack as family escape with severe burns

A suspected arson attack has led to the death of a five-year-old girl in the Powerline area of Alagbado, Lagos while she slept at their makeshift home.

The incident was allegedly carried out by one Shola Adewunmi, a 45-year-old man who had a misunderstanding with the mother of the victim – his daughter. The woman and another two of her children were severely burned as well.

The police confirmed the victims to be one Mrs. Anitan and her three children; Ayo, Esther, and five-year-old Nifemi. It was revealed that while all other members of the family sustained various degrees of burn, Nifemi was consumed in the fire.

“They were sleeping and suddenly, there was fire outbreak. They sustained severe burns before they were rushed to the hospital,” the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Mr. Imohimin Edgal disclosed.

Edgal further disclosed that the victim died from the burns she suffered in the fire and that the suspect has been arrested.

“Evidence we have so far is that the man purposely set fire on the house with intent to burn both the woman and her children alive.”

He said the man will be charged to court when investigations are concluded in due time so that he can answer to his crimes.
