Five major Lagos highways that have become refuse dumps

The recent return of refuse heaps on the medians of major highways and inner roads across the sprawling city of Lagos and its environs, particularly at weekends, is heightening residents’ fears that refuse dumps are returning to Lagos streets.

On a recent visit to some of the major highways, especially the highly commercialized areas, it was observed that some Lagos highways has become refuse dumpsites, In most cases, it was observed that refuse heaps were left uncleared for several days. prominent among the dirtiest of the highways are the under listed:

Apapa Creek Road:

Lagos state generate daily waste average of about 12,000 metric tonnes and it’s as if half of the generated waste from the state are deposited on this road. The messy environment of Apapa Creek road is not good for the image of the state; it’s so sad to see what the major road leading to the main artery to the fourth biggest port in Africa has degenerated into

Oyingbo-Otto road:

Oyingbo is enmeshed in garbage kingdom, huge heaps of refuse have engulfed the metropolis, especially in front of UBA Oyingbo
Oyingbo market has a chequered history, It used to be one of the oldest and busiest markets in Lagos. The saying that Oja Oyingbo ko mo p’enikan o wa (Oyingbo Market does not recognize the absence of anyone) is no longer true,as customers are beginning to notice the absence of people with stalls around the heap in front of UBA Oyingbo
Our correspondent spoke to a top government official and he seek anonymity disclosed that  “For the past two to three weeks, we have been noticing refuse on the roads and investigations have revealed that part of those carrying out such act and sabotaging government efforts are these cart pushers and probably there might be some people behind them”
Worst still,is the outbreak of Lassa fever in the country;this is a wake up call that there might be an epidemic of exponential proportion if urgent steps are not taken by the health ministry and other concerned departments to arrest the heaps of of refuse in Oyingbo and its environs.
 
Lekki-Ajah road:
The quantity of the waste that people on the island generate ends up, not in polythene bags or bins, but on the curb, in gutters, on street corners from the cart pushers and finally to Ajah bus stop, Ajah bus stop is an eye sore.
With such refuse everywhere in Ajah bus stop, there is no doubt that rodents, cockroaches, mosquitoes, flies find veritable places to inhabit.
The degree of refuse dumps and the stench are also unimaginable, Rainy season will soon be here again, government should not forget the annual flood in Lagos, greater percentage of what led to the flooded streets of Lekki/Ajah axis were due to bad waste disposal habit. Some resident deliberately dump wastes into the drainage, canals, which causes blockages.
Lawanson-Itire road:
Waste has taken over the Lawanson-Itire road, the road is in a deplorable state
According to one of the residents of the area, Aina Jacobs, “Julius Berger constructed this road and it was one of the best roads in Lagos some time ago.
Residents of Lawanson and Mushin environs of Lagos State are groaning over the continued accumulation of refuse heaps in the areas.
Jacobs described the situation as embarrassing and unhealthy.
Mile 2-Tin Can Apapa road:
The Mile 2-Tin Can Apapa road is one long stretch of debris, danger, death traps inhabited by hoodlums, it’s a total package of stench and robbery “It is not a sight to behold;urgent action should be taken to address the situation of the which is unhealthy.
According to reports, it was gathered that waste disposal  will be carried out by a body called Visionscape International.
Heaps of refuse could result into outbreak of skin and respiratory diseases; this road need urgent attention.
