FG says Jonathan safe, evacuated from Guinea-Bissau after military coup
The Federal Government has confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan has safely departed Guinea-Bissau following Wednesday’s military takeover.
In a brief statement issued on Thursday, Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Jonathan boarded a special flight out of the country with his team.
“Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau. He left on a special flight with members of his delegation, including Mohamed Chambas,” Ebienfa stated.
The development comes a day after soldiers in the Portuguese-speaking West African nation announced they had seized power, suspended the ongoing electoral process, and would administer the country “until further notice.”
Jonathan was in Guinea-Bissau as part of the 36-member observer mission jointly organized by the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) to monitor the presidential election.
Nigeria has pledged to collaborate with regional bodies to ensure a swift restoration of constitutional order and the return of democratic governance in the country.
