FG Reduces KWAM 1’s Flight Ban, Names Him Airport Security Envoy

The federal government is set to appoint Fuji artiste Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for airport security protocol, Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo announced on Wednesday.

Keyamo said the move is part of measures to ensure celebrities promote proper conduct at airports nationwide.

“In the case of KWAM 1, the NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to one month. FAAN will also work with the music star to engage him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward,” the minister said.

The minister added that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will also withdraw criminal complaints lodged with the police against KWAM 1.

The development follows the artist’s apology over an incident at the domestic terminal on August 5, during which he said the flask he held contained medically prescribed water, not alcohol. The incident had led to the suspension of two ValueJet pilots and a no-fly order against the musician.

“Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the police,” Keyamo noted.

On compassionate grounds, Keyamo also directed aviation bodies to retrain security staff to better manage unruly travellers and defuse tense situations.

He stressed that while safety and security remain top priorities, the government has decided to draw a line after “these clemencies.”
