Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s Transgender Military Ban in Major Legal Defeat
The U.S. President Donald Trump, a federal judge has blocked the enforcement of his executive order banning transgender individuals from serving in the military.
Judge Ana Reyes issued the ruling on Tuesday, marking yet another judicial setback for Trump’s sweeping policy agenda. Reyes became the second judge to block the order on the same day, as legal battles intensified over the administration’s controversial directives.
The rulings came just hours apart, coinciding with Trump’s efforts to initiate impeachment proceedings against a separate judge who temporarily suspended deportation flights.
In her decision, Reyes acknowledged the contentious nature of the ruling. “The court knows that this opinion will lead to heated public debate and appeals. In a healthy democracy, both are positive outcomes,” she wrote.
However, she underscored the importance of upholding the rights of those who serve. “We should all agree, however, that every person who has answered the call to serve deserves our gratitude and respect.”
Reyes also pushed back against criticisms of judicial overreach, asserting that checks and balances between government branches are essential. “Judicial overreach is no less pernicious than executive overreach,” she stated. “The court must act to uphold the equal protection rights that the military defends every day.”
Since returning to office, Trump has aggressively targeted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs across federal agencies. One of his first executive orders mandated that all U.S. government employees working on DEI initiatives be placed on immediate paid administrative leave.
Calling such programs “dangerous, demeaning, and immoral,” Trump’s crackdown extended to the military. Last month, the U.S. Army announced that it would no longer accept applications from transgender individuals, aligning with Trump’s broader policy stance.
This move was reminiscent of his first term in 2017 when he declared that transgender individuals had no place in the military—an order later reversed by his successor, Joe Biden.
