Fatal error: Huugjilt was 18 when he was convicted and murder for offences he didn’t commit.

The teenager, simply identified as Huugjilt, was found guilty and put executed for raping and mudering a woman in a public toilet in Hohhot, Mongolia in 1996, CCTVNews reports.

But he was innocent.

That only became apparent in December 2014 when another man, Zhao Zhihong, confessed to the crime. He was in turn convicted and sentenced to death.

Acknowledging the fatal error, the Autonomous Region of Mongolia in a statement released on Sunday said the 27 Chinese officials involved had been punished.

According to the statement, 26 officials involved in the case – mainly police officers and court officers – received administrative penalties including admonitions and records of demerit. The 27th official is subject to further investigations and may face criminal charges.

But Huugjilt’s parents are not satisfied with the said punishment.

In a post on China’s twitter equivalent Sina Weibo, the said:

“An 18-year-old boy was put to death when there’s not sufficient evidence. But they (people who are responsible) have only been punished by ‘records of demerits’…Will the public buy the results?”.
