FAAN to implement cargo tariff adjustment from February

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that it will commence the implementation of its revised cargo tariffs on February 2, 2026.

According to the authority, the decision follows the stabilisation of its internal operations and the sealing of major revenue leakages that previously undermined earnings.

FAAN had earlier announced a tariff review on June 23, 2025, attributing the move to revenue losses linked to obsolete charges. However, the implementation was postponed to allow the agency address systemic inefficiencies within its operations.

FAAN said the deferment was intentional, noting that introducing the tariff increase earlier would not have resulted in meaningful revenue growth due to existing operational gaps.

A senior official of the authority, quoted in the report, said the recent operational reforms now place FAAN in a position to benefit fully from the adjustment.

“With the operational corrections now firmly in place, the Authority is confident that the tariff adjustment will translate directly into improved revenue performance,” the official said.

The revised tariffs apply specifically to cargo-related services, including port charges, air cargo imports and exports, transshipments, and cargo vehicle surcharges.

Under the new structure, port charges will rise from N7 to N20 per kilogram, while air cargo fees will increase from N5 to N15 per kilogram. Fees for transhipment, courier services, and perishable goods will also be adjusted from N20 to N40 per kilogram.

Although this marks FAAN’s first cargo tariff increase in nearly two decades, the development may raise trade costs, as importers and exporters are expected to pay more for cargo handling services.
