EU: We respect Nigeria’s sovereignty, religious neutrality

The European Union(EU) has reaffirmed its respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and expressed commitment to strengthening collaboration on peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and human rights protection.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, made this known during an interview in Lagos on Tuesday, following recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened military intervention in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians.

Mignot emphasized that the EU’s stance is guided by its enduring partnership with Nigeria and shared democratic values, not by external influence.

“Our position is one of solidarity with Nigeria — solidarity with victims of violence, with authorities striving to protect citizens, and with the Nigerian people who overwhelmingly desire peaceful coexistence beyond ethnic and religious divides,” he said.

He reiterated that the EU fully respects Nigeria’s constitutional commitment to religious neutrality and remains a partner in promoting stability, security, and inclusive development.
According to Mignot, the EU is prepared to deepen its engagement through programmes focused on peace, security, and defence, while maintaining dialogue with government institutions, civil society groups, and traditional and religious leaders.

“We support initiatives on deradicalisation, demobilisation, and reintegration of former members of non-state armed groups in the north-east,” he noted.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s ongoing challenges regarding human rights and freedom of religion, Mignot said the country’s legal framework provides a strong foundation for protecting fundamental freedoms.

“The situation is not perfect, as in any country, but there exists a constitutional basis for the protection of human rights. It is up to Nigerian authorities and society to uphold and strengthen this environment of peaceful coexistence,” he added.

The envoy further stated that the EU remains committed to protecting all communities and will continue providing non-discriminatory assistance to all victims of violence, regardless of the motives behind such attacks.
Mignot also disclosed that a peace, security, and defence dialogue between Nigeria and the EU is expected to take place soon, as both parties work to deepen strategic cooperation.
He concluded by reaffirming the EU’s long-term commitment to Nigeria’s stability and prosperity.

“Nigeria’s future lies firmly in the hands of Nigerians themselves,” Mignot said.
