Enyeama Debunks Rumor Of Being Appointed To The National Team

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has clarified his recent cryptic message about being in the Super Eagles camp for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast. He also debunked rumors that he has been offered any role to the National team.

Enyeama dropped a message on Instagram On Sunday, December 31,2023 ,hinting he may join the technical crew of the national team when the Eagles camp opens in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

He wrote, “Let’s go, see you in camp. Time for business,” while reacting to a post about the team’s AFCON preparations on the Social Media account of the Super Eagles.

The Former Lille goalkeeper On Tuesday, January 3, 2024, later cleared the air that he was just going to visit the Eagles in camp when he attends the Continental tournament and encourage the players to make the country proud.

“I haven’t been given any appointment by the NFF, neither was there any such discussion. That was only a personal comment meaning I will visit them in camp when I attend the AFCON. Any opportunity to encourage the lads, I use it,” the former Eagles captain said.

Ahead of their quest for a fourth AFCON title slated to start January 13, 2024, the Eagles camp opened on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi. The camp will last till January 9, before the team departs for Ivory Coast from Lagos on January 10.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has also denied adding the former goalkeeper to the Eagles technical crew, ahead of the tournament. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed that Enyeama has not been offered any role in the technical crew for the tournament.

Enyeama made his debut for the Eagles in May 2002 and went on to make 101 appearances for the national team and was the most capped Nigerian player until Ahmed Musa surpassed him. He also won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

He is regarded as Nigeria’s most successful goalkeeper after playing in five Nations Cup in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2013 – and was also part of the Nigeria squad at the 2002, 2010 and 2014 World Cup tournaments.

The Super Eagles would be playing in their 20th Africa Cup of Nations Tournament with their first match scheduled on January 14, against Equatorial Guinea. They will then face host nation Ivory Coast four days later, then rounding up their group stage journey with a clash against Guinea-bissau on Monday, January 22, 2024.
