#EndSars: An Important Editorial From Neusroom Editors

Only one person can stop the #ENDSARS protests now. His name is Muhammadu Buhari. And he’s the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Here’s what he needs to do.

Address Nigerians at 7am tomorrow through a live NTA broadcast simulcast on Channels TV, Arise TV, Hip TV, MTV base, Soundcity, Trace, TVC, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Thank Nigerians for their patriotism and apologise for all the hardship they’ve suffered. Confirm that the Inspector General of Police has agreed to step down, and announce a replacement immediately.
Announce the names of at least 10 SARS officers found to have infringed on citizens rights and instruct the CJN to ensure their prosecution. Promise to give an update in 5 working days.
Reiterate that SARS remains banned and any officers found to violate the rule will be prosecuted and jailed up to 10 years if found guilty.
Mention the names of all those killed by SARS, and assure their families there will be justice. Promise that their names will be immortalised and that their families will be compensated.
Look into the camera and assure young Nigerians none of them will ever have cause to fear the police again and that you value and appreciate their hard work and innovation. Mention leading lights in science, technology, media, entertainment, agriculture and business.
Announce the formation of a panel of inquiry to look into all the SARS and general police abuses and appoint a credible list of members and chair.
Promise that the FG is working with CBN to refund all donations to the protest, and donate a government fund to the verified bodies leading the movement. Immediately name the young ladies driving the intervention into a national security mobilization advisory committee
Assure Nigerians of their right to gather and protest. And encourage them to keep coming out until they confirm themselves that your words have been matched with actions. Promise to provide all the security they need and to meet with as many groups as possible. Encourage governors to do same.

Bonus: show up at the homes of at least two of the killed protesters within 12 hours, in company of the new IG. Together with the VP and IG, hold a virtual AMA session with 1000 young Nigerians selected through the ENDSARS hashtag. Listen to all the feedback and respond honestly.
