Eko Electricity will end fixed charges, but increase tariff
Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDP) says it plans to end its infamous monthly fixed charges its consumers are mandated to pay.
EKEDP says it intends to forward the plan to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for approval.
“The company is proposing to abolish fixed monthly tariff charge from their bills but this has to be approved by NERC,” EKEDP boss Oladele Amuda told stakeholders at a forum in Lagos, on Monday.
“I can assure you that if NERC approves the abolishing of fixed charge by October, we will start to implement it immediately,” he said.
As part of the proposal, the company will increase electricity tariff from N17 to N25 per kilowatt, Amuda said.
Amuda said the new tariff would help his company serve its customers better.
He also said the company had engaged two Nigerian meter manufacturers to supply 50,000 prepaid meters.
With prepaid meters, the regime of outrageously “crazy bills” will end as customers will only pay for amount of electricity used.
