EFCC Acknowledges Glitches in Recent Vehicle Auction, Promises Transparency Moving Forward

In a recent development, Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has admitted to encountering significant “glitches” during its high-profile auction of 891 forfeited vehicles, which took place from January 20 to 27. The electronic auction, aimed at providing a transparent platform for Nigerians to purchase seized assets, attracted over four million participants. However, the process was marred by widespread complaints of rigging, technical failures, bid manipulation, and a perceived lack of transparency.

Participants in the auction voiced their frustrations, alleging that bids mysteriously disappeared and the entire system seemed rigged to favour select individuals. These concerns have cast a shadow over what was intended to be a landmark event in the country’s fight against corruption.

In response to the growing outcry, Dele Oyewale, the head of EFCC’s media and publicity, stated on Thursday addressing the mounting criticisms. He acknowledged that the commission had received numerous complaints about the auction process and the performance of the auctioneers.

“Relevant departments within the EFCC monitored the exercise and can confirm that there were indeed glitches,” Oyewale said. “These observations were immediately communicated to the auctioneers for corrective action.”

However, Oyewale clarified that the EFCC could not directly intervene during the ongoing auction due to legal constraints. According to Sections 4(a)(b) of the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act, 2022, and Section 55 of the Public Procurement Act, 2007, the auction process had been delegated to accredited and licensed auctioneers.

“The complaints arising from this exercise are unfortunate and detract from our goal of providing a seamless and transparent platform for millions of Nigerians,” Oyewale continued. “The EFCC intended to ensure that every participant had a fair chance to acquire these forfeited assets through an online auction system designed for maximum transparency.”

Despite the setbacks, the anti-graft agency is committed to ensuring that those who successfully navigated the flawed system without encountering issues will receive their vehicles. “The commission is currently awaiting the final report from the auctioneers and assures the public that all genuine complaints will be thoroughly reviewed,” Oyewale added. “Those who followed the process correctly and emerged as winners will certainly be allocated their vehicles.”

The EFCC remains steadfast in its mission to dispose of seized assets in the most transparent manner possible, ensuring that the nation benefits from the proceeds. “Our only interest in this public auction is to ensure that the assets are sold fairly and that Nigeria gets value for them,” Oyewale emphasized. “This commitment cannot and will not be compromised under any circumstances.”
