Edo: Mother rains hot soup on 13-year-old daughter for sleeping in neighbour’s room
An angry mother has caused serious bodily harm to her daughter by raining hot soup on the teenager.
The incident reportedly happened in Benin, Edo state.
According to reports, the middle-aged woman, identified as Tricia Oterneghoro, had entered into an argument with her 13-year-old daughter.
The victim, Joyce Emmanuel, said the argument arose when she told her mother she wanted to go out and have her bath on Monday night.
Her mother refused, but Joyce went ahead to have the bath anyway. It was then Tricia allegedly locked the teenager outside, prompting her to sleep in a neighbour’s room.
“It was evening and I said I want to take my bath but my mummy said no. I went out to take my bath and my mummy locked the door. After knocking many times, I went to sleep in my friend’s house,” Joyce said.
“In the morning, my mummy came and pour hot soup on my body.”
Joyce sustained burns on her chest as a result.
Residents reportedly rushed to the teenager’s rescue, and berated the mother for repeatedly maltreating the little girl.
Tricia, however, denied pouring the hot soup on her daughter intentionally. She claimed she was angered as Joyce was unrepentant about her action the previous night.
She also said had warned her neighbours not to meddle in her affairs with her daughter.
“A woman with correct sense will not do this to her daughter. I have warned her not to beat the girl again. Her father called yesterday and the girl said she was interested in going to nursing school,” Punch quotes an elderly neighbour is quoted as saying.
Tricia had been arrested by policemen from Oba Police Station.
