Drama in court as acquitted inmate begs court to return him to prison

Tobias Mbaekwe, a prison inmate who hails from Ozubulu in Ekwusigo local government area of Anambra State, yesterday, Thursday, 14th of December, stirred-up a mild drama as he refused to leave the prison premises after the state Chief Judge, Justice Peter Umeadi acquitted him of his charges on health grounds.

Mbaekwe pleaded for his continuous stay in prison, as he refused to go home after being discharged by the Justice.

He collapsed on the floor shortly after the ruling that he would be granted bail, begging the Chief Judge to allow him to stay back in the prison.

Giving the reasons backing his decision to stay in prison, Mbaekwe said his family members have ganged up to kill him because of a land meant for his father.

Mbaekwe said, “They said they will kill me if I come back home. They grabbed my father’s land after killing him in 1980. They later kidnapped me and threatened to kill me and that is why they abandoned me here since 2012.”

He maintained that he wishes to remain in prison where his life will be more secured.

Justice Umeadi, however, directed the Aguata Prisons Welfare Officer to take him to the DPP of Ozubulu Police station who would, in turn, accompany him home.
