Dazan Charity: YabaTech sets up “evil” committee to “identify, punish protest leaders”

Oluwabukola Charity Dazan died aged 27. This picture was take by one of her friends on Tuesday February 2, 2016 during her departmental traditional day.

YabaTech authorities were not readily available to verify or deny the claims in this article.

After the questionable death of final year student Dazan Charity Oluwabukola sparked violent protests at Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech), the school authority is allegedly moving to identify and victimise the students who spearheaded the unrest.

Dazan, 27, took ill and died after YabaTech and Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta practically played ping-pong with her life, angry students allege.

The school and FMC then gave contradictory accounts of the lady’s death, the students said.

A two-day protest trailed Dazan’s tragic passing. The school’s medical facility, which students say is as good as non-existent, was vandalised in the process.

A reliable source told NewsroomNG, on Tuesday, the school is pressuring lecturers into identifying students who spearheaded the protests so they can be punished.

“I don’t know how the students will be punished but I can tell you that the school is looking for them,” the source said.

“They have even set up a committee to that effect. The committee is designed to lure students into giving information about the protest and the death of the poor lady. I can assure you that students who come forward will be victimised.

“It’s sad that instead of planning how to compensate Dazan’s family, the school is making this evil move. I urge the education and health ministers to immediately launch an investigation into the death of Dazan.

“FMC and YabaTech should face a probe so this will not happen again. That is the only way out.

“I believe the committee is set up to do something terrible and evil to students,” the source said.

NewsroomNG gathered that YabaTech has constituted the committee in question. But we’re not sure if the committee is a trap for students.

The committee, on February 17, urged students to come forward with information regarding how Dazan died so her death could be properly investigated.

A circular was pasted around the school to that effect.

The bizarre thing is: YabaTech evicted its students after the protests so there’s little chance any student would respond to the committee’s call.

The school has suspended all academic activities for four weeks yet it’s asking students, who are nowhere in sight, to forward information to it via a physical suggestion box mounted at the school gate.

It said it would stop receiving such information on February 21. That was Sunday. Expired. But it seems the committee can still be reached via email and a dedicated phone line.

We called the number on that circular to verify these scenarios but met a brick wall.

“I can’t confirm anything to you…I can’t even confirm if the committee was set up by the school,” the woman, who said she’s secretary to the investigation committee responded.

She said only the chairman of the committee, who she said is a woman, can answer our questions.

“If you want any information, you will have to email us or come and meet us physically,” she said..
