YabaTech: Students vandalise medical centre after Charity Dazan’s burial

The students are angry as they believe the death of their colleague could have been prevented.

The chaos rocking Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) in Lagos is not about to subside.

NewsroomNG reported earlier that the college’s students were protesting following the death of a female student who, until her death, was tossed back and forth like a tennis ball between the school’s medical centre and the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Ebute-Metta.

We can confidently report that the said student has been buried at the Atan Cemetery, not very far from the school premises.

Afterwards, her mates, still livid, thronged to the medical centre and wrecked massive damage.

They threw stones at the facility, broker windows, wrecked the center’s ambulance, and set the place on fire. But officials were able to put out the flames before it could spread.

They complained that the facility was useless as it has no drugs despite that students pay about N3,000 medical fees every session.

After vandalising the medical center and watching security officials put out the fire, the students, refused to leave. The officials also made no attempt to arrest them.

Our correspondent saw many of the students filming themselves while vandalising the facility. There were female students among them. But those took no active part in the vandalisation aside cheering wildly as windows were shattered and doors were broken.

The students even went inside the ex-ray room and wrecked some damage on the ex-ray machine.

A security official was overhead swearing on his life the students would pay for every damage done.

“If one of you faint now, which medical facility will he or she come to?” an official asked.

But the students didn’t seem perturbed. They said the medical facility was useless as sick students (whatever the nature of their illness) are only handed paracetamol.

“They should call this place ‘paracetamol center’ not ‘medical center'”, one student told NewsroomNG.

“We only come here to register for medicals because the document is need for official purposes. Aside that, this place has no health benefit. It’s totally useless.”

Below is the vision statement of the medical center.
