"Cultists" invade Delta home, injure father and son, cart away money, phones

About six armed robbers invaded a home in Ughelli, Delta State on Monday night.

The gang, believed to be made up of cultists from the area, reportedly robbed their involuntary hosts of an undisclosed amount of money, a source who pleaded anonymity told Newsroom on Tuesday.

Our source, who is in Lagos for now, is a member of the family that was robbed.

cultism“They attacked my parents last night,” he said.

“Thankfully, no life was lost. But they used their guns to inflict minor injuries on my father and my brother.”

The source showed us a picture of his brother, his face bloodied. We refrained from publishing the image for obvious security reasons.

“They were about six in number,” our source said.

“They took money and phones. My brother and father were injured and will seek medical attention later in the day.

“Ughelli is becoming hot everyday because of the activities of cult boys who deal in attacking rival cultists and robbing innocent residents,” he said.

“The government had better taken security seriously. These armed robberies are becoming too much.”

Delta police spokesperson Kalu Amadi Celestina told Newsroom she was not aware of the incident.

“Maybe they are yet to report the robbery to the police,” she told our reporter who called her line.

“We have found that most Nigerians are afraid of reporting these incidents to the police, and we are encouraging them to stop being afraid.

“If crime becomes the norm in any area, reporting such to the police will help us focus on those areas so we can protect the people.

“The media need to educate Nigerians on that. We are not magicians. We need the help of Nigerians to curb crime.”
