Court Orders Final Forfeiture of $4.7M, N830M, and Properties Linked to Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele
A Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled in favour of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), ordering the final forfeiture of $4.7 million, N830 million, and several properties allegedly linked to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
Justice Yellim Bogoro, who presided over the case, delivered the judgment on Friday, granting the EFCC’s application for the assets’ permanent forfeiture. This ruling marks a significant development in the ongoing anti-corruption drive targeting high-profile figures in Nigeria.
The EFCC had previously secured an interim forfeiture order against the funds and properties, arguing that they were acquired through proceeds of unlawful activities. With this final ruling, the Nigerian government is now legally empowered to seize and repurpose the recovered assets.
Emefiele, who led the CBN from 2014 to 2023, has faced increasing scrutiny over his tenure, particularly regarding allegations of financial misconduct and mismanagement of public funds. The latest court decision adds to his mounting legal challenges as authorities continue investigations into his financial dealings.
