Commuters, motorists lament as LASG neglects road beside State High Court

Commercial tricycle operators popularly known as the Keke Napep have appealed to the Lagos State government to repair Oba Akinjobi road, G.R.A, Ikeja.

The road connects the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja with the Attorney General’s office, as well as other parastatals in the axis.

The Keke Napep operators alleged that the government has neglected the road, and expressed surprise that the road could be ignored despite the number of state government parastatals in the area.

They described that during the rainy season, the road becomes practically impassable for pedestrians and tricyclists alike.

According to James, one of the operators who spoke to Newsroom correspondents on a visit to the area on Saturday, the road has gotten progressively worse as the rains arrived.

“If rain falls, this place is totally filled with water. Some vehicles will get stuck in the flood after water must have entered their Marwa,” he said.

The road has been unfriendly to vehicles who ply it daily.

James, referring to the number of judges said to be resident of the area, said they appear like they couldn’t be bothered.

“My tricycle is always in a bad condition which cost me more money than what I make a day to put it in order. You can imagine an area where we have rich men and yet we are suffering from the bad road. If the government has failed to do their job, why can’t the rich men repair the road? They prefer to use their big jeep so that they can’t be affected, we poor tricycle drivers are the ones suffering it,” James said.

Ojo, another tricycle operator, said “How much will it take to repair this particular spot? All that is needed is a grader to remove the mud and fill the place with gravel, stones and sand and the problem is solved.

“The attitude of government concerning our roads is rather very unfortunate.”

A man who said he was on a visit to the area said he was surprised only that portion of the road beside the State High Court that was in such deplorable condition.

“It is unbelievable that we have all these government ministries in this area and this road is like this,” he told us.

For some reason, an effective repair has not been carried out on the small portion of the road beside the State High Court, despite recent rehabilitation works on roads across the state.
