Cholera sweeps over Zamfara, kills 80

No fewer than 80 persons have lost their lives to cholera outbreak in Zamfara, the Commissioner for Health in the state, Alhaji Suleiman Gummi, has said.

Gummi said on Tuesday that at least 500 others were receiving treatment at various health facilities in the state.

The communicable disease had spread to at least 10 out of the 14 local government areas of the state in the past one month, NAN reports.

The affected local governments were given as: Bungudu, Maru, Maradun, Talata-Mafara, Bakura, Anka, Kaura -Namoda, Birnin-Magaji and Zurmi.

The commissioner said health personnel had been deployed in the state to combat the situation and the Federal Government had been notified.

He urged citizens of the state to keep their environments clean and also ensure to prepare their food under hygienic conditions.

Cholera causes severe watery diarrhoea and is highly contagious. It arises from consumption of unsafe food and water.
