Chimaroke Nnamani announces exit from PDP, a month after expulsion

Chimaroke Nnamani

Former Governor of Enugu State, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, on Monday, March 20, 2023, announced his exit from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), barely 24 hours after losing his Senate re-election bid to Chukwu Chizoba of the Labour Party.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Monday, March 20, 2023, Nnamani said he consulted with his constituents before making the decision.

“Former Governor of Enugu state and Senator representing Enugu East in the Senate, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani has formally withdrawn his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) just as he expressed appreciation to his constituents for the unalloyed support over the years,” the statement read.

Nnamani served as Governor of Enugu state for two terms from 1999 to 2007. He was then elected Enugu East Senatorial Districts in 2007 and has been Senator for 16 years. He lost his attempt to return to the Senate for a fifth term to the Labour Party.

Nnamani’s exit from the PDP is coming a month after the party announced his expulsion on February 10, 2023, 15 days to the 2023 presidential and national assembly elections held on February 25, 2023.

A statement by the PDP spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba, on Friday, February 10, 2023, said Nnamani and six others were expelled over anti-party activities.

Nnamani, who openly declared support and campaigned for the APC presidential candidate and was also included in the APC’s Presidential Campaign Council, had mocked his expulsion by the PDP in February and claimed he remained the party’s candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District.
