Chaos erupts in Nigerian House of Representatives over move to reverse Electoral Act Amendment
Proceedings at the House of Representatives turned chaotic on Tuesday as lawmakers clashed over a motion seeking to reverse the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
The motion was introduced during plenary by Francis Waive, chairman of the Committee on Rules and Business. He urged the chamber to rescind its earlier decision on the bill, which had been passed on December 23, 2025.
When the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, put the motion to a voice vote, the “nays” appeared louder than the “ayes.” However, Abbas ruled in favour of the “ayes,” declaring the motion carried.
The decision sparked immediate protests from several lawmakers, who voiced strong objections on the floor. Abbas subsequently proposed that the House move into an executive session, but this suggestion was also resisted. Despite the opposition, the Speaker proceeded to usher the chamber into a closed-door session.
