Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos Announces Nine-Day Mourning for Pope Francis’ Passing
The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has unveiled a series of solemn observances to honor the life and legacy of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88 following a stroke.
In an official circular released on Tuesday, Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins expressed profound gratitude for the late pontiff’s “life of committed service and personal sacrifice,” hailing his “remarkable contributions to the life of the Church.”
As part of the official mourning, a Holy Mass for the repose of Pope Francis’s soul will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 23, at noon, at the historic Holy Cross Cathedral in Lagos. The Archbishop urged all parishioners to attend the Mass in large numbers, describing it as “an act of love and devotion” to the man who faithfully served as the Vicar of Christ.
A condolence register will also be opened at the cathedral starting Tuesday, April 22, for priests, religious, and lay faithful to offer their tributes and expressions of sympathy.
In recognition of the Pope’s death, the archdiocese has declared a nine-day mourning period, beginning Monday, April 21 and concluding Wednesday, April 29. During this time, papal flags at all parishes will be flown at half-mast. Churches are encouraged to display photographs of Pope Francis adorned with flowers, while special prayers and petitions for his eternal rest will be offered during all Masses.
The faithful are also enjoined to recite the traditional “Prayer during a Sede Vacante” at the end of Masses and during personal or family devotions, calling on God to guide the Church through this period of transition and the election of a new Pope.
“Pope Francis, known for his humility, pastoral heart, and unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalised, leaves behind a legacy that has reshaped the modern Church,” Archbishop Martins noted. “His teachings on mercy, environmental stewardship, synodality, and inclusivity have left an indelible mark on Catholics around the world.”
