Bus conductor, 52, arraigned for allegedly raping landlady

A 52-year-old bus conductor, Segun Awogbemi was on Thursday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates Court in Lagos for allegedly raping his landlady.

Awogbemi was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and rape, for an offence he was accused of committing at his residence on Saidatu Street, Oregun, Lagos, on October 9.

He allegedly had carnal knowledge of a woman identified as Sarah Emmanuel, after she had invited him to share a drink in her room about 9:00 p.m.

Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, the prosecutor, told the court that the accused and others at large then conspired to rape the complainant after she had retired to bed.

“After the drink, the complainant went back to her room, feeling intoxicated and slept off immediately without locking her door,” Ayorinde said.

He further alleged that Sarah woke up the next morning to discover she had been raped by Awogbemi and others still at large.

“The complainant resulted to shouting and cursing that whoever raped her will become swollen and die.”

Awogbemi pleaded “not guilty” to the charges and the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Omolade Awope, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should swear to an affidavit of means and produce evidence of two years tax payment to Lagos State.

The case was adjourned till Dec. 27.
