BREAKING: US shuts 1,000 Los Angeles schools over bomb threat
At least 1,087 United States schools have been ordered shut after officials received a bomb threat on Tuesday morning, reports say.
The affected schools are part of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second largest school district in America.
The Los Angeles School Police confirmed that all students at district schools will be sent home due to a possible electronic threat, CNBC reports.
“I think it is important that I take the precaution based on what has happened recently and what has happened in the past,” LAUSD Superintendent, Ramon Cortines, said in a press conference.
“Before the day is over, I want every school to be searched to make sure that it is safe for children and safe for staff to be there on Wednesday.”
“I can tell you that we know of no other threats that we’re aware of, unless other agencies have gotten specifics outside of LAUSD,” said Steven Zipperman, chief of the LA School Police.
LAUSD is the second largest in the nation and enrolls more than 640,000 students, at over 900 schools, and 187 public charter schools..
