BREAKING: Gunshots at Lagos airport, 2 injured
This post has been updated.
Two people sustained gunshot wounds at the Murtala International Airport in Lagos on Friday afternoon.
Their injuries are not severe, authorities say.
They were at the receiving end of bullets reportedly discharged from a secret service agent, a source told NewsroomNG. The source said the incident is being treated as an accidental discharge.
The two injured persons, including the security detail, have been taken to an undisclosed hospital, authorities said in a statement.
The “accidental discharge” reportedly happened at the counter of Arik Air. The officer involved is orderly to an unnamed Nigerian senator. He injured himself and another woman.
“His gun went off in its holstered position and injured two people,” the source said. “The officer was simply being too careless with his gun. He should have kept it on safety lock.”
Travelers reportedly ran for cover in panic after hearing the shots. The number of shots fired from the gun is unknown.
Airport officials are reportedly trading blames over the “accident” which happened at the general aviation terminal of the facility..
