BRAVO! Senator Tammy Duckworth makes history, becomes first woman to take baby to US Senate chamber
Senator Tammy Duckworth has become the first woman in United States’ history to take a baby to the floor of the Senate chamber.
Duckworth, who had also been the first sitting senator to give birth in office after putting to bed over a week ago, carried her baby girl to the senate to vote on Thursday.
The US Senate only recently agreed to a historic rule change that allows senators to bring infants onto the chamber floor.
Duckworth spearheaded the push for the rule change. She gave birth to her second child, Maile, 10 days ago.
“It feels great. It’s about time,” Duckworth, representing Illinois, said of her accomplishment.
“”I think it’s historic, I think it’s amazing,” she added.
The rule change, voted through by unanimous consent, was done to accommodate senators with newborn babies, allowing them now to be able to bring a child under 1-year-old onto the Senate floor and breastfeed them during votes.
