Blackout as national grid collapses — fifth time in 2024
The national grid suffered its fifth collapse of 2024 earlier today, leaving millions of Nigerians without power.
The latest incident occurred at 2:55 pm, with generation dropping gradually until it reached zero, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The collapse, described as partial by the TCN statement, has sparked concerns about the reliability of the country’s power infrastructure. Despite efforts to restore power, many areas remain in darkness, with residents expressing frustration over the frequent disruptions.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) attributed the outage to a system failure from the national grid, assuring customers that efforts are underway to restore power.
We understand that some of our customers are still without power due to a system failure from the national grid at 2:55 PM today, 5th of August 2024, the statement read in part.
The DisCo further assured customers that power would be restored to areas still experiencing the blackout as soon as the system becomes stable.
Please be assured that the system is gradually stabilising, and we are working diligently with all relevant stakeholders to restore power to the affected areas as quickly as possible, the statement concluded.
This is the 5th collapse of the national grid in 2024
The national electricity grid, on February 4, collapsed for the first time in 2024. Also, the country suffered another nationwide blackout on March 28. On April 14, the nation’s electricity grid experienced another system collapse.
The last time the grid collapsed was a month on the 6th of July when the electricity grid experienced a system failure, leading to a nationwide blackout.
