Banky W determined to win House of Reps seat despite strong opposition
Banky W has made a name for himself as one of the pioneers of the present wave of pop music in Nigeria, but with his latest declaration to run for public office, it seems he’s not a man that rests on his laurels. This is obviously not for fame, rather he said it’s more of making an impact and helping to fix Nigeria, starting with his community.
It’s the beginning of a new phase for the Empire Mates Entertainment boss, who’s on bill as Modern Democratic Party candidate for Eti Osa Federal constituency of Lagos state, which is currently represented by APC’s Akinloye Babajide. Mr. Babajide had recently clinched a returning ticket in the party’s primaries and is set to vie for re-election next year.
While a lot of people have lauded his courage, there are others who question the propensity of his candidacy. For those who doubt his ambition and waiver the ability of his party to beat the incumbent, Mr. Wellington has this to say: “I am under no illusions that this run will be easy considering who we are going up against, this is almost impossible.”
“You dream big but you start small, and you never let small minds convince you that your dreams are too big. I’ve seen dreams come true; and it’s amazing every time. I am, infact, a living proof, that the unlikeliest of dreams can indeed come true.”
The task ahead will test his resolve as he goes head to head with candidates from two of the most popular political parties in Nigeria, the APC and PDP. Banky seems unfazed by this reality and is willing to give it his best shot. “I can live with trying and failing, I can’t live with not trying,” he said.
Beyond his celebrity status, Banky Wellington has exhibited high intellectual capacity and the ability to build strong institutions with his work at EME, which was responsible in discovering and nurturing the talent of Wizkid among many others.
Although this is his political debut, Banky has been involved in philanthropy and advocacy, using his voice and influence to champion the cause of others. He was a key proponent of the #VoteYourFuture campaign that rallied more than 3,000 youths in voter orientation.
