Babajide Sanwo-Olu: Why We Invited DSS to Investigate Mohbad’s Death
A week after the tragic loss of Ilerioluwa ‘Mohbad’ Aloba, the Lagos State government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed the Department of State Security Service (DSS) to participate in the ongoing investigation into the singer’s death.
“In order to boost the investigations, I have invited the Department of State Services (DSS) to join the investigation and widen the dragnet with inter-agency collaboration and the use of best-in-class technology to unearth the truth,” reads a statement signed by Governor Sanwo-Olu.
The passing of 27-year-old Mohbad on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, just a few months after he disclosed that his former record label, Marlian Records, had threatened his life, has triggered widespread outrage among Nigerians.
On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, protesters took to the streets to demand justice for the late singer. Many expressed their lack of trust in the police’s ability to unravel the mysteries surrounding Mohbad’s death and bring the culprits to justice.
While some have alleged that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s decision to involve the DSS indicates a lack of trust in the police to conduct a thorough investigation, the Nigerian Police took action on September 18, 2023, by establishing a 13-man Special Team to probe Mohbad’s death.
As public anger continues to mount over his sudden and controversial demise, there is a growing concern that some Nigerians might resort to mob action in their quest for justice. However, Governor Sanwo-Olu has appealed for calm.
“I also appeal to all friends and fans of the deceased to stay calm and refrain from making inflammatory statements and reaching prejudicial conclusions on this matter. Staying calm and following due process will be our most solemn tribute to the memory of the departed talent,” he urged.
