Army promises to replicate “peaceful” elections in Ekiti, Osun in 2019

If the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States are any indication of how the 2019 general poll will go, then there may be no cause for worry.

Though the elections were marred by some irregularities at polling units, they were largely peaceful.

Many have expressed fear that next year’s election may not be peaceful.

They may not need to panic as the lack of violence in both states has been noted as a yardstick by the military for the poll set to hold in about two months.

Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai said during the Annual Conference Wednesday that his men would ensure next year’s election go as smoothly as the ones held few months ago.

“As the nation moves towards the 2019 General Elections, the NA is conducting Operation SAFE CONDUCT to support other security agencies during the period of elections in the country,” he said.

“The NA activated the operation on 14 July 2018 during the elections in Ekiti and Osun states and it was a huge success.

“We intend to replicate the successes achieved, during the 2019 General Elections because we believe that a secure electoral process will play a critical role in safeguarding our democracy into the future.”

The COAS also cautioned his men not to display any form of partisanship during the poll.
