Anambra Governor advises residents of flood-prone areas to relocate
Residents living in flood-prone communities in Anambra State have been asked to relocate by the state government.
State Governor Willie Obiano said in a statement on Thursday that many communities will still experience intense flooding due to impending rainfalls.
A nine-year-old primary three pupil of Light International School, Okoti, girl, Benedict Izuchukwu, reportedly died in a flood on Wednesday.
The state government mentioned the areas at risk of flood as Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra West and Anambra East.
“The Government of Anambra State has renewed its directive to all residents within the coastal areas in four local government areas to immediately leave their places in view of the raging flood water threatening to overrun the areas,” the statement by the Commissioner for Information in the state, C-Don Adinuba, reads.
“The forecast by relevant agencies that these places will experience very high levels of rainfall resulting in dangerous floods is coming to pass.
“The state government has made arrangements for the effective and efficient evacuation of residents of these local government areas and relocate them to designated holding centres.
“The centres have been provided with sanitary facilities, water boreholes, beds, cooking utensils, and foodstuffs.
“A number of water ambulances and other marine transport vehicles are on standby.”
Hundreds of people across several communities in the North Central and South South have died while properties worth billions have been lost to flooding.
