Alleged Drug Kingpin Arrested in Lagos After Years of Smuggling into Korea
In a major crackdown on international drug trafficking, authorities in Nigeria have arrested a suspected kingpin of a notorious cartel responsible for smuggling illicit drugs into South Korea for over five years.
According to the Korea Times, the Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) confirmed the arrest of 59-year-old K. Jeff on February 13, following an extensive joint investigation with Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Jeff believed to be the mastermind behind a global drug trafficking network spanning five continents, was apprehended alongside 36 other members of the syndicate. His cartel allegedly operated across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, manufacturing and distributing methamphetamine and other illegal substances.
The investigation dates back to 2021 when authorities in Korea tracked down cartel members attempting to smuggle drugs from Ghana. The captured suspects provided crucial intelligence, enabling Nigerian authorities to locate the cartel’s operational base. This led to a coordinated effort to dismantle the syndicate.
Jeff’s criminal history stretches back to at least 2007 when he was convicted in Korea for drug smuggling and sentenced to 12 months in prison before being deported to Nigeria the following year. However, rather than stepping away from crime, he allegedly expanded his network and devised new methods to transport drugs, including deceiving individuals—Koreans among them—into unknowingly smuggling illicit substances.
Authorities also revealed that the cartel exploited romance scams as a means of recruitment, tricking unsuspecting victims into trafficking drugs across borders.
