All passengers rescued as LAGFERRY boat catches fire in Ikorodu terminal

A routine ferry trip turned into a morning of chaos on Thursday when a boat operated by Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) burst into flames at the Ipakodo terminal in Ikorodu.

The vessel, carrying 19 passengers en route to Victoria Island, caught fire around 6 a.m., sending plumes of smoke into the sky and sparking panic among commuters.

In a swift response, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and emergency teams launched a rescue operation, ensuring all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated. However, four individuals sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical care.

“Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team swiftly mobilized to the scene, working in close coordination with LAGFERRY, other boat operators, and first responders to manage the situation effectively,” LASWA said in an official statement.

Authorities have since launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, vowing to strengthen safety protocols across the Lagos waterways.

“Safety is our utmost priority, and we are committed to implementing necessary measures to enhance fire prevention on all ferry routes,” LASWA assured.

This incident follows a similar fire outbreak in November 2023, when a commercial boat ignited at a loading point in Ikorodu due to an electrical spark during fueling.

With water transportation playing a crucial role in easing Lagos traffic congestion, this latest mishap raises fresh concerns about maritime safety in the state.
