Akpabio Demands Probe Over Assassination Allegation by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, calling for a swift investigation into what he described as a “malicious and false” accusation made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central.

The petition, submitted in response to allegations made during a homecoming event in Kogi State on April 1, centres around a bombshell claim by Akpoti-Uduaghan. Speaking to her supporters, the senator accused Akpabio of instructing both Governor Usman Ododo and former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State to assassinate her.

Akpabio, in a strongly worded letter to the police chief, denounced the accusation as a “heinous lie” intended to destroy his reputation, endanger his life, and spark public unrest. He called for Akpoti-Uduaghan’s immediate investigation and prosecution for criminal defamation, incitement, and conduct likely to breach public peace.

“This is not just a personal attack—it is an assault on democratic institutions,” Akpabio stated. “Public officeholders must be held accountable for reckless statements, especially when such claims can destabilize the country.”

He further alleged that the assassination claim was a calculated move to cast him as a political villain and sow discord. “There is no truth, no evidence, and no justification for such a serious accusation,” the Senate President insisted.

The tension between the two lawmakers has been simmering for months. Their rivalry first came into the public eye following a heated confrontation in the Senate over seating arrangements. That clash spiralled into more serious accusations from Akpoti-Uduaghan, who later accused Akpabio of sexual harassment.

In a dramatic twist to the ongoing feud, the Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months in March, citing violations of legislative rules. The decision further polarized public opinion and fueled an already explosive political standoff.
