African communicators must fight for accountability and openness in AI adoption- by Yoleme Omojefe

I believe there’s still a lot of “untapped gold” within the technological landscape and in the opportunities that AI presents to Africa’s media and communications sector.

As Africans, our strength lies in our values, culture, stories, diverse perspectives and people. It is therefore our collective responsibility to not only adopt AI but also promote its ethical and responsible use.

For communicators, this means doing more than just adopting AI tools; we need to actively participate by fighting for accountability and encouraging openness in how AI is used.

In my view, ethical AI in Africa should entail safeguarding and preserving the integrity of our values and stories and ensuring that technology remains a force and not a distortion.
