22-year-old delivered of twins becomes fourth COVID-19 patient to give birth at LUTH

Amid the accelerating figure of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria, there is still a silver lining through the dark clouds. Nigeria presently has 6401 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday May 19, 2020, 192 have died and 1,734 have been discharged.

In Lagos, the epicentre of the virus with 2,755 confirmed cases, a 22-year-old COVID-19 patient has been successfully delivered of a set of twins at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

This brings to four, the number of expectant mothers diagnosed for the deadly virus who have successfully put to bed at the health facility.

About a month ago, Neusroom reported that a team of doctors, anaesthetists and nurses at LUTH delivered a 40-year-old COVID-19 patient of a baby girl.

The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of LUTH, Prof Wasiu Adeyemo, announced the new delivery on Tuesday. In a statement shared on the hospital’s official Twitter handle, he said “A team of LUTH doctors, anesthetists and nurses today delivered the fourth expectant mother (22 years old) diagnosed with COVID-19 of a set of twins.”

“The baby girl weighed 3.2kg while the baby boy weighed 3.25kg. She delivered through a caesarean section. The mother and babies are doing well.”

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, also said the mother, 22 years lady tested positive to #COVID19 and was admitted for treatment and necessary observations for the last stage of pregnancy.

“The delivery was carried out through successful Caesarean Section by the medical team LUTH,” Abayomi tweeted. “Lagos state government appreciates the doctors, nurses at LUTH and other health workers for their dedication”.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), has said there is no evidence that pregnant women infected with coronavirus are at higher risk of severe illness than other patients who test positive.

WHO added that there is still no proof that “a pregnant woman with COVID-19 can pass the virus to her foetus or baby during pregnancy or delivery. To date, the virus has not been found in samples of amniotic fluid or breastmilk.”
