A tragic boat collision in Imore town, Amuwo-Odofin LGA of Lagos State, has left 21 people dead after two boats capsized in the middle of the lagoon on Monday night. The boats, each carrying 16 passengers, reportedly collided, leading to the deadly incident.

Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police, confirmed the incident, revealing that it was reported to the Ilashe police division around 7 pm.

“A distress call was received at the Ilashe division reporting that two unregistered passenger boats collided in the middle of the lagoon. Unfortunately, both boats capsized, resulting in the drowning of several passengers,” Hundeyin explained.

Rescue teams, including local divers, marine police, and other emergency responders, were promptly mobilized.

According to Hundeyin, “11 passengers were rescued with injuries and rushed to the Naval Hospital in Navy Town, Alakija, for medical attention.”

Despite their swift response, 21 lives were lost in the accident.

The accident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of water transport not only in Lagos, but across the country with the frequent occurrence of such accidents.

Recall that a week ago, a boat ferrying over 300 people capsized in Niger State. Over 60 people reportedly lost their lives in that accident.
