2019 General Elections And Many Unanswered Questions

Last weekend, Nigerians came out in their thousands to elect candidates into political offices. As with the presidential elections, the gubernatorial elections did not go as planned. From the east to the west to the south and even the north, there were reports of high voter apathy, card reader glitches, widespread violence and in some cases total breakdown of law and order.

Personally, I feel embarrassed, that in our 50+ years of existence, we still find it difficult to conduct credible elections. A whole giant of Africa. It is a shame that as a nation, we still condone a committee of the ruling class that has very little or nothing to offer.

The 2019 general elections have come and gone, but it is clear as day, that Nigerians are now more divided than ever. With several reports of abduction, voters intimidation and politicking of the Military; you will agree with me, the elections have been nothing but disappointing.  The presidential elections were characterized with voters suppression, targeted violence/deaths, inflations of poll figures and other electoral malpractices. One would have thought that the gubernatorial elections would be devoid of the shenanigans that accompanied the presidential elections.

While last weekend elections were peaceful in some states, in other states, war was practically declared on citizens as they attempted to exercise their civic duties. Take Rivers State, for example, the complete breakdown of law and order triggered the suspension of the elections. It is very sad that in this century, our leaders still take pleasure in the sorrow and grief of “their”people.

In Oyo State, capital of the defunct Western Nigeria of the 1960s, a federal lawmaker was shot dead by alleged political thugs at a  collation centre at Lagelu Local Government Area. The senseless killing is another testament to the fact that our leaders favour brawn over brains.

The event that occurred last weekend in Rivers State, Oyo State and the recent arrest of a Deputy Governor is reflective of the fact that we are still a very long way from attaining political freedom. One can go on and on, but the truth is that the end’s not near and that worries me greatly.
