2019 Election: Senate approves N189 billion for INEC

The Senate has approved a N234 billion sum for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the 2018 budget.

INEC had requested N189 billion to conduct the 2019 general elections. N45 billion was provided for the commission under statutory transfer.

NAN reports that the approved N189 billion will be vired from both recurrent and capital components of the Special Intervention Programme captured in the Service Wide Vote of the 2018 Appropriation Act.

The budget was passed following the presentation of the report of the Committee on Appropriation.

Senator Danjuma Goje, who chaired the committee, said that President Buhari’s request for N242 billion for INEC and security agencies to conduct the election was considered.

Goje, according to NAN, said the executive allocated N143 billion for INEC from virement in the 2018 budget, but didn’t specify the source of the virement.
