102 casualties, 6 fatalities: Lagos government gives update on train-bus collision

Six people have been confirmed dead from the collision between a train and a bus conveying staff of the Lagos state government to work on Thursday, March 9, 2023.

Prof. Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, on Friday, March 10, 2023, revealed that there were 102 casualties from the accident which occurred along the PWD rail crossing, off the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ikeja.

“Two deaths occurred at the scene of the accident and four died at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, LASUTH,” he said via his verified Twitter account.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is seeking re-election, suspended his campaigns and announced a three-day mourning for the victims.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the accident. The vehicle was conveying staff of the Lagos State Government, our staff who serve the state in different capacities,” he said during his visit to the victims at the hospital.

Prof. Akin Abayomi said that all victims of the accident were first admitted and treated at LASUTH before 25 patients were moved to five General Hospitals in Lagos to decongest LASUTH.

“All victims of the accident with varying degrees of injuries including life-threatening conditions such as head and chest cases were admitted and treated at LASUTH.”

The crash is coming less than two months after nine people died in Ojuelegba area of Lagos when a truck conveying a 20ft container landed on a commercial bus in January 2023.
