1 killed, 3 injured as police officers clash with soldier in Ebonyi
A clash between a soldier and police officers in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, has left one person dead.
The incident which occurred in Ugwuachara village, Ebonyi Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday morning was confirmed by the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, Adaku Uche-Anya.
The clash also left three other persons injured.
Conflict ensued when police officers conducting a stop-and-search operation in the area flagged down a motorcycle belonging to a soldier for search.
The soldier tried to disarm one of the officers when the firearm discharged. The stray bullet struck dead the victim passing by who has been identified as a labourer.
Three other persons are presently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
“The soldier was trying to disarm one of the policemen when the bullet discharged and hit a bystander. It was not a case of the policemen opening fire on bystanders.
“One person died, and three others are injured but are responding to treatment in hospital.
“We have identified the soldier, who is stationed in Kaduna. Both the soldier and the policemen involved are in our custody,” the Commissioner explained.
